Completing Defensive Driving Course Does Not:

  • prevent a mandatory suspension or revocation
  • eliminate your responsibility to pay a driver responsibility assessment
  • give you a way to reduce future driver violation points
  • prevent general premium increases or premium increases due to violations or accidents

How Does It Work?

  1. Check If You Qualify
For Insurance Reduction benefit, call your car insurance provider and verify with an agent that you will receive an insurance reduction after completion of the Defensive Driving Course. For driver license points reduction, contact DMV to verify how many points will be reduced on your driving record after the course completion.
  2. Complete Defensive Driving Course
Choose your course provider and complete defensive driving. You have 30 days to finish it.
  3. Activate Benefits
Send your Defensive Driving Certificate to your car insurance provider to activate the insurance reduction discount. Please, talk to your insurance agent for details on where to send the certificate.
For driver license points reduction, you don't have to do anything. After you successfully complete the defensive driving course, your test results will be automatically reported to your local DMV.

Requirements

  • 4 Points Reduction: Can only be received once in any 18‑month period. Reduction can only apply to the violations prior to the defensive driving class. It can NOT be used for the future violations. "Point reduction" means that points for all your violations will still show on your DMV driving record, but during total points calculation, 4 points will be subtracted from the total count which may help you to avoid a suspension.
  • 10% Auto Insurance Discount: You must take the course once every 36 months to maintain insurance reduction benefits.
